Thorn Queen by Richelle Mead

Hey guys,
I read the second book the Dark Swan series, which apparently I've also read before but have no memory of it. At all.

GoodReads Summary:

Eugenie Markham is a shaman for hire. She's paid
to bind and banish creatures from the
Otherworld.

But something happened after her last battle. She became queen of the Thorn Land. With her kingdom in tatters, her love life in chaos, and eager to avoid the prophecy about her firstborn destroying mankind, the job's really not all it's cracked up to be.

Now young girls are disappearing from the Otherworld, and no one seems willing to find out why. Or to put an end to it. Not that Eugenie's fazed by spilling fey blood, but this enemy is shrewd, subtle, and dangerous -- and nursing a very personal grudge.

Eugenie must venture deep into the Otherworld and trust in a power she can barely control. She may be a reluctant queen, but she's vowed to do her duty, even if it means facing the darkest and deadliest side of her nature.

My opinion:
Spoilers
Oh, where do I begin (although my feelings for the third one are... not very positive)?
I know that my reviews are kinda all over the place and if someone hasn't read the book it may be a bit difficult to grasp everything and why I'm saying certain things. And I'm sorry for that I'd try to be more conscious of the details.
Let's start with the plot itself. The story of the missing gentry girls and how it unfolded was an interesting one. It was        to see Eugene looking at the gentry as people and not some monsters and I think it was in this book that she finally accepted that there were good and bad guys in both worlds and break from her prejudice.
The relationship between her and Kiyo, in my opinion, was a joke. He practically moved his cats and dogs to her house and only came whenever convenient, had sex and off he went to his pregnant ex. I don't think he was supportive of Eugene, he would constantly fight with her about using her magic and honestly it was like he was trying to make her something she wasn't. I don't know, I just don't like him. He also messed up with her when his daughter was born. How could you not tell your partner your ex is in labor and Eugene had to learn from other people?
But I don't excuse Eugene either, Mead tried to make her flawed, but honestly sometimes she's just stupid. She cheated with Dorian and I know she was trying to play it as nothing happened and how they actually didn't have sex, but it was all to make herself feel better. She is bouncing back and forth between the two. I mean she went to the Underworld in Storm Born to bring back Kiyo to life, which is supposed to be some big declaration of love but the way she's acting I don't see it.

The surprise in this book (of course not counting the last chapters) was Jasmin and how much I began to like her. I thought her an insufferable  teen before and in this book at some parts she continued to be so but her character developed into someone with dry sense of humor and practically the only reasonable voice in the book, except Volusian. Seriously, Eugene should listen to his advice more.
The last pages as I said were something I didn't not see coming. I usually have pretty good idea where the plot is leading but this time was different. And honestly reading about human (in this case) gentry trafficking and subsequently Leith raping Eugene was disgusting and it came out of nowhere. I mean, everyone was trying to rape her but I didn't expect that someone would actually manage it considering she was a queen now. And the events after only made me dislike Kiyo more. I mean he was practically ok with what happened. I get why he didn't want Leith to be killed but... come on, he could've at least shown more emotion and I expected he would at least beat the shit out of him.
In this one I can see what problems could arise for the next one - both plot and character-wise. I certainly hope Eugene won't mope around after Kiyo. I mean it looks like she's going to be with Dorian now (btw this sex scene in the end was too unrealistic, I can't imagine anyone would want to have sex only a week after being raped) but I can see her bouncing back and forth again. Honestly, one of the things I'm most excited about is her remaining with Dorian, because as we can see she isn't faithful (as far as I'm concerned once a cheater always a cheater) and I wonder how their relationship is going to play out.

Book Review: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

“Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.”  Hey guys, it's time for another book review, as the 2018 Reading Challenge is going great. This is the fifth book that I've read in January. As you know I read Alias Grace by Atwood at the beginning of the month and I was amazed by the story and the writing. Unfortunately, this didn't happen with The Handmaid's Tale. GoodReads Summary: Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her...
