BookReview: I Heart New York by Lindsey Kels

Hey lovelies,
I'm back with another book review. I went back to my hometown to visit my parents for 2 days and I didn't bring my laptop with me, because I didn't want to travel with any baggage - all I had was my everyday bag. Which led to the inevitable question what should I do? I went out with friends, did some errands but you can't spend every moment with other people, at least I can't. So, I searched through my personal library at home for quick short entertaining read that wouldn't be too serious. It's safe to say that I didn't have any expectations about this book, since it came with one issue of Cosmopolitan magazine and I didn't even have any idea how it came to my possession.

GoodReads Summary:

Get ready to meet Angela Clark as she flees the world’s worst wedding for a new life…

It's official. Angela Clarke is in love – with the most fabulous city in the world.

Fleeing her cheating boyfriend and clutching little more than a crumpled bridesmaid dress, a pair of Louboutins and her passport, Angela jumps on a plane, destination - NYC.

Holed up in a cute hotel room, Angela gets a New York makeover from her NBFJenny and a whirlwind tour of the city that never sleeps. Before she knows it, Angela is dating two sexy guys. And, best of all, she gets to write about it in her new blog (Carrie Bradshaw eat your heart out). But it's one thing telling readers about your romantic dilemmas, it's another figuring them out for yourself …

Angela has fallen head over heels for the big apple, but does she heart New York more than home

My opinion:

It started promising - there was intrigue, drama and witty main character who wasn't afraid to do disgusting but hilarious things as a revenge to her cheating fiance. The scene when she catches him in the act was done quite well and I liked that it had details which are often neglected but ultimately give realism to the reader (I know some people would disagree and be repulsed by mentioning bodily fluids but to each their own). Then Angela goes on her big adventure in New York - and this is where the believable factor stops.
I've come to realize that expectations are everything - I didn't have high hopes for this book so the first pages seemed very entertaining, but they did bring my levels of expectation up so it all went downhill from there. Or maybe the book was too rushed at 307 pages.
The plot and the main motives of it were lost in the numerous descriptions of makeup, clothes, designers and tourist attractions. Actually, I think that if those are cut the book page count would be about 200. There was no clear direction.
Angela as a character was flat and maddening. I couldn't see anything that interesting about her. We have other characters constantly praising her about how strong and amazing she is but I didn't see it. Not to mention her "amazing" articles which were nothing more than the writings of an average blogger.
The love triangle was also unnecessary as it only made Angela more unlikable. She proved to be a judgmental user who thought was better than men who were doing the exact same thing she did. The final scene between her and one the man was infuriating because of the double standards she was measuring herself and him. She was also quite stupid sometimes. She was always thinking about how she doesn't want the two men to know that she's dating them at the same time but then she just goes ahead and tells them about her blog. WHERE SHE WRITES ABOUT HER DATING LIFE. And then when both of them casually tell her they know she is in utter shock. I mean, come on...  This is what I think she looked like:

The ending was also illogical. The whole book (supposedly) was about Angela finding herself and turning into a strong woman and then when she had to make a decision it wasn't hers but everyone else's.  The final pages of her articles were also just padding and in my opinion we could have skipped it.

Book Review: The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

“Better never means better for everyone... It always means worse, for some.”  Hey guys, it's time for another book review, as the 2018 Reading Challenge is going great. This is the fifth book that I've read in January. As you know I read Alias Grace by Atwood at the beginning of the month and I was amazed by the story and the writing. Unfortunately, this didn't happen with The Handmaid's Tale. GoodReads Summary: Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her...
